18th Annual Kearney Dog Sled Races

Feb 11 & 12, 2012

Trail Update

January 25, 2012

Trails are in excellent shape with a two foot base.  They survived the rain no problem and received a fresh coat of powder on Tuesday.

Training is taking place on the trails and the grooming is going well.

Any questions, please call Ron at 705-636-7528

Over the summer and fall, the 4 & 6 Mile Trails have been brushed with a bush-hog up to 12 feet wide.

On the 40 and 120 Mile Trails, the Algonquin West ATV Club did major work with an excavator on the hill near the steel bridge, the trail has been widened & straightened considerably. They also have replaced some bridges on the north loop of the 120 Trail.

The Ministry of Natural Resources have replaced the top on the Cripple Creek Bridge so there is no more lake travel.

Our 40 Mile Race will definitely be 40 Mile this year (GPS).

Our trails committee have worked hard to ensure that these trails are in excellent shape for these races on February 11th & 12th. As in past years, Kearney has an unlimited amount of snow and scenery for all races. Hope to see you there.

Our 4Mile, 6Mile and 4Mile Ski-Joring races start near the Community Centre in down town Kearney. The race will continue down Main Street to the White’s Farm Walking Trails. The course will then follow scenic bush trails around the Kearney Legion and Ball Diamond then return to the Walking Trails and finish on Main Street (opposite side as the start).

These newly designed trails will fully eliminate head-on racing and provide much more spectator viewing areas and a separate start and finish line. This course is both scenic and challenging for all levels of racers.

These changes have resulted in using much more of Town property, therefore the use of snowmobile trails have been reduced as much as possible to help to make the race safer. All caution areas (a few hills, curves and narrow areas) will be well marked.  These trails will be used for the 4Mile, 6Mile and Ski-joring races.

The 40Mile race starts at the Community Centre and follows the above trail, continuing out of Town using snowmobile trails and logging roads for the next 25 miles. There are many hills and corners making it very challenging and scenic course for the racers. The race continues back to Kearney on the snowmobile trail. The finish line will be same as for the other races.

The 120-mile racecourse will follow the 40Mile trail as described above.  An additional 20 miles has been added to the middle of this course.  This loop uses part of Rain Lake Road and continues on abandoned logging roads.  This trail will prove to be very challenging and rewarding for the mushers.
